Desert Mob Background
Desert Mob is an initiative of the Araluen Arts Centre, developed as a way of promoting Aboriginal Art from Central Australia to a wide audience. From the onset, Desert Mob has been a selling exhibition and has offered a unique opportunity to see what is currently happening in Aboriginal owned and managed art centres in Central Australia, all in the one venue.
Desert Mob had its beginnings in 1991 when it was known as the Central Australian Aboriginal Art and Craft Exhibition. In 1997 the exhibition was renamed The Desert Mob Art Show before changing to its current name of Desert Mob in 1999.
In 1991 there were 13 art centres who participated in the first exhibition, however this number has steadily increased to between 35-40 each year, in line with the continual development of new art centres in remote communities throughout Central Australia and in Alice Springs.. The scale of this event has also increased significantly and the annual exhibition now comprises more than 300 artworks presented across three of the Araluen Arts Centre galleries. Desert Mob continues to be the only exhibition in Australia showcasing current trends from Aboriginal art centres in Central Australia.
All artworks exhibited in Desert Mob are selected by the participating art centres.
